Hexagons & English Paper Piecing

English paper piecing is defined as:
A technique in which fabric is basted over paper templates; the shapes are then whip-stitched together. It is often used to piece small shapes with precision.

What the definition doesn't say is how much fun English paper piecing is! You can make a pieced quilt or units for applique as Linda did in Magen's Flower Garden, the quilt in the banner above.

I sell papers from two different companies: Sue Daley's Busyfingers and Paper Pieces. The Busyfingers papers come from Australia and are more expensive. The Paper Pieces are made in America. The papers from both companies are similar in weight but the Busyfingers papers are slicker and, if you baste with the Sewline Glue Pen, they are a little easier to remove. You might want to try both brands to see which you prefer.

Last but not least, if you love hexagons, click here or scroll to the bottom of the page to find the Hex N More Ruler.

EPPing Notions

Sewline Glue Pen

I'm using this glue pen to baste the seam allownces to the paper in English paper piecing. It works, it's fast, and I love it!

Run the glue along the edge of the paper, not the fabric. Fold the fabric over the edge of the paper and onto the glued area. The glue comes in blue, pink, or yellow but it dries clear. Once dry, it holds the fabric securely but it also releases with little effort. Click here for a how-to video.

TIP - Use a light hand with the glue; it doesn't take much.

Bigger Tip: Don't press until you've removed the papers! I pressed mine and that made the fabric harder to peel free. Linda tried it without pressing and it was a lot better. I'm sorry for a prior tip where I told you to press. You really can learn something new every day.

Thread Heaven

Even though it is not technically necessary, my thread seems happier if I 'condition' it with Thread Heaven. You may not use it all the time, but it's handy to have on hand if your thread is misbehaving.

I do use Thread Heaven when I am English Paper Piecing.

#9 Crewel Needle

This is my favorite needle when I am English paper piecing. It is also a good needle to use with our size 12 or 16 perle cotton when you are stitching with attitude.

$2.80 for a pack of #9 needles, 15 needles per pack
