Say hello to Wool Applique, the Piece O' Cake Way!
Wool is a sumptuous fabric. The colors are rich, the texture is inviting. Wool is particularly interesting when it is mixed with cotton and/or linen fabrics, as we do in this book. Inside you will find 12 cheerful projects that include wall quilts (small and large), a foot warmer for the bed, small kitchen quilts, a table runner, a zippered pouch, and more. Click here to see a video showing you whats inside the book.
Click here to see photos of all of the projects in this book.
This book is full of helpful information and pretty patterns that both beginners and more experienced sewers are sure to enjoy. You will find many helpful tips on the nature of wool and how to applique it.
We recommend that you applique wool shapes with a blanket stitch and either wool or perle cotton thread. This keeps the focus on the applique itself, rather than on the stitches used to sew the shapes down. Included are detailed illustrations for how to sew a blanket stitch, and how to sew neat and tidy inner and outer points.
We found that fusing wool applique shapes with Soft Fuse Premium works very well. And, just lately, I have found that the In The Patch glue stick is a good choice for those who prefer not to fuse. Click here to see a video on this subject.
Appliqueing with wool is both fast and satisfying. It looks lovely, especially when combined with prints. Try it—we think you'll love it!

Piece O' Cake Quilts
On the rare occassions when I use fusible web, this is the product I reach for. It is particularly good to use when fusing felted wool. I use a teflon pressing sheet with it.
Package includes 10 sheets 8" x 9".
Alice, who reads my blog, has this to say about Soft Fuse:
"I tested a sample of the Soft Fuse for Quilter's Quarters in Conroe and found I like it better than [the other fusible] I've used for years. It leaves the applique soft, not stiff at all, and washes beautifully. I fused a small heart on the tail of a knit shirt and it has gone through several washings just fine. It fused quickly and permanently after a few seconds.
I didn't see any time suggested on the package I received, so used 15 to 20 seconds. I recommend it highly and will use it in the future.

This 13" x 17" double-sided sheet from Bear Thread is made from ultra high temperature glass and is coated with a non-stick Polylon. (I think the makers mean 'fiber-glass', but maybe not, and I have no idea what Polylon is, but the sheet works and that's what matters to me!)

Phyllis Meiring at In The Patch told me that this is the best glue stick to use with wool. After working with it, I have to agree. Sometimes it is just easier to glue a shape in place, rather than fusing it. It’s inexpensive, which makes it easier to give it a try.

FYI: I wouldn’t use it to English paper piece. I think it might stick too much to the papers.
This 6" scissor is sturdy and very sharp; it comes with a hard plastic sheath. This scissor is serrated, which means that one blade is smooth and the other has little serrations control the fabric as you cut.
These scissors have large finger loops and fit people with bigger hands and longer fingers. I use them to cut both woven fabric and felted wool.
BIG TIP: Always cut with the smooth blade on the underside of your fabric. Your scissor will then be able to glide into position, without getting hung up on the serrations.

The part of the threader that does the work is a flat piece of bent metal that slips through the eye of the needle. It is sturdier and easier to see than the typical fine wire that is in most threaders.
The flat piece of metal is big enough that it only works on a big needle with a long eye. It only works with one of the needles that I carry, but that's enough for me :-).
This threader fits the #5 Tulip Embroidery Needle. I use it with #12 and #16 perle cotton and floss. You might also be able to use it with thicker threads and this needle, but these are the threads I have threaded successfully.
