This has become my preferred thread for hand piecing. When you sew on the machine, two threads (top and bobbin) hold the pieces together. In hand piecing, there is only one strand of thread. It makes sense to use a strong thread.

Aurifil's 28wt cotton thread is similar in thickness to a 30wt thread. This thread has a softer twist that allows it to blend well into the fabric. It is thicker than a 50wt thread and does occupy more space in the seam allowance, but it is also stronger.


Each spool has 109 yards - 100 meters of thread.
I use Tulip's #9 Piecing needle with this thread.

I made the hand piecing video below before I found the 28wt Aurifil thread. In the video I am using Superior's Masterpiece 50wt that comes on prewound bobbins. It is a finer thread and it does work. However, if you haven't tried the 28wt Aurifil thread, you might want to invest in one spool to give it a try. If you are like me, you may find that you like it better.
