Jen Kingwell's Postcard Projects always include an acrylic template and pattern (with short instructions) to use in hand or machine piecing. One shape repeats. BUT in this Postcard Partners package there are FOUR templates and FIVE different postcards to make FIVE different projects! The Catherine Wheel, on the pattern cover, combines all the shapes. Sweet!
The templates in this package are the same as those in Postcard Projects #11 (1 1/2" Hex), #12 (6 Pointed Star), #14 (Rhomboid), and #18 (Half Rectangle Triangles).
Measurements: Each flat side of the Catherine Wheel block should measure about 4 1/2”. From flat side to flat side, across the center of the block, it should be about 7 7/8”, but a lot will depend on the thread you sew with, fabric, and where you actually sew the seam.
Hand-piecing makes for a great take-along project, and this partner project takes it to a new level. This pattern is written for hand piecing but as the Acrylic Templates include a ¼” seam allowance, it can be machine pieced. Skill Level: Beginner-Intermediate.
Learn how it all works in the 1st video below. The 2nd video shows how to use the diamond template alone—any of the templates works the same way. The 2nd video shows the hand-piecing stitch for right-handers, the left-handed version of this video can be found on the video page. Happy stitching!
