Stag Beetle Facts:

The scientific name of the Scarab beetle is Scarabaeidae. A Scarab is a very special beetle with amazing skills! Scarab beetles, also known as dung beetles, form balls of dung to lay their eggs in. They do this by day and use their chisel-like head to make the ball perfectly spherical. They roll the ball by pushing them with their back legs and on their way, and climb on top to navigate where to go.

Scarab beetles use the sun, the moon, and even the Milky Way to navigate! Once they find their destination, they bury the ball in the ground. It's because of this behavior that the ancient Egyptians linked solar god Khepri to this beetle. Because the rolling around of the ball and making it disappear was compared with the sun that moves around the sky and vanishes every day.

Scarab beetles can reach from 0.08 to 6.7 inches in length and up to 3.5 ounces of weight. Most species of scarab beetles are black or brown colored, but tropical species are usually brightly colored and covered with numerous markings. Even the body of some species of Scarab beetles have metallic sheen!
